United States: English singer-songwriter Morrissey responded after Miley Cyrus backed out of a guest spot on his upcoming album, disputing that the singer did so because of his political views, which he claimed are “most certainly not far right.”
The former Smiths vocalist denounced “cancel vultures” in a lengthy statement and claimed there was an effort to “put out of circulation.” 63-year-old Morrissey revealed Cyrus had wanted to be taken off his next album Bonfire of Teenagers last month. The song I Am Veronica was supposed to have Cyrus’ backup vocals on it.
Morrissey claimed that Cyrus’s choice was made after he split with Capitol Records. The 63-year-old singer cited that Cyrus chose against being on the album due to a personal problem that was unrelated to him in a new article he published on his website.
“In truth, Miley has backed off for reasons unconnected to me, having had a major clash with a key figure in ‘the circle’,” Morrissey wrote.
“Miley knew everything about me when she arrived to sing ‘I Am Veronica’ almost two years ago; she walked into the studio already singing the song,” the statement said.
“She volunteered. I did not ask her to get involved. Her professionalism was astounding, her vocals a joy to behold. Every minute that I spent with Miley was loving and funny,” Morrissey noted.
Regarding politics, the singer refuted the accusation that he belonged to the far-right, anti-Islam For Britain party and made provocative remarks about race and prejudice.
