United States: Mr. Jaylen Smith, an 18-year-old college student from the state of Arkansas, has become the youngest black mayor to be elected in the US.
Mr. Smith, a representative of Democratic Party, is elected to lead the rural town of Earle, 30 miles (48km) west of Memphis, Tennessee.
According to the Arkansas Municipal League, the teenager defeated Mr. Nemi Matthews, who has served as the street superintendent and sanitation superintendent of the town, in a runoff election.
The election result was 235 to 185, according to the data revealed from the Crittenden County Clerk’s office. The opponent in election congratulated the new mayor on his win and wished him good luck.
Mr. Matthews shared on Facebook that “first I want to Thank everyone that supported me during this entire election. Secondly I congratulate Mayor elect Mr. Jaylen Smith for a well ran race I wish you well. Again Thanks.”
During his high school period, Mr. Smith has served as president of the school’s student government association, and held leadership roles in school clubs.
As the elected mayor, the 18-year-old shared that he will concentrate on transportation, public safety and bringing a major grocery store to the city. Increasing residents’ access to food sources will be the prime focus of the mayor.
