FIFA World Cup 2022; German team cover mouths in protest

It was an intentional act of disobedience against Fifa, which has threatened seven countries, including England and Wales, with sporting sanctions if their captains wear OneLove armbands during matches.

Qatar: The World Cup of protest and animosity had taken yet another explosive turn with Germany’s players covering their mouths with their hands to suggest they had been restrained by football’s governing body, Fifa.

The German Interior Minister, Ms. Nancy Faeser, who sat next to Fifa President Gianni Infantino and also wore a OneLove armband, which encourages tolerance, diversity, and LGBTQ+ rights, added strength to their message.

It was an intentional act of disobedience against Fifa, which has threatened seven countries, including England and Wales, with sporting sanctions if their captains wear OneLove armbands during matches. Before the team’s shocking 2-1 loss to Japan, six players, including Captain Manuel Neuer and Ilkay Gundogan of Manchester City, also wore Adidas boots with rainbow stitching, and during the warm-up, the whole German squad wore jerseys with rainbow-coloured sleeves.

Same-sex relationships are prohibited in Qatar while organisers and Fifa have reiterated that “everyone is welcome” during the World Cup, it is unclear whether regulations that criminalise behaviours like kissing in public have been suspended.

Similar levels of ambiguity surround the question of whether rainbow-coloured flags and attire are allowed, given that the Qataris have removed such items from some fans. The authorities have yet to reply to the Football Association of Wales’ protest after security personnel took away fans’ rainbow-coloured bucket hats before the match against the United States.

England is reportedly keeping a careful eye on the effects of Germany’s decision, and the Football Association is among the countries considering whether it will be permissible to contest Fifa’s threat to penalise athletes for wearing the OneLove armband.

“As a squad, we all stand for it. We all wanted Harry to wear it, but I think the decision got taken out of our hands as a squad and as players. If Harry wore it and got a yellow card and missed the next game it’s not going to be ideal for us,” England’s Goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, remarked.
