United States: Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation 5 gaming consoles in the United States, citing rising costs, tariffs, and a challenging economic environment.
All three PS5 models will see a $50 hike. The base model will now retail at $499.99, while the most expensive PS5 Pro is priced at $749.99. Accessories, however, will remain at their current prices, with no changes announced for other markets.
The decision comes as US importers of Japanese goods face a 15 percent tariff, adding to the burden on companies like Sony. Isabelle Tomatis, Vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that, “We’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting on August 21.”

The US move follows earlier price increases in the UK and Europe, where Sony blamed high inflation and volatile exchange rates.
The gaming industry at large is facing similar pressures. Nintendo recently raised the price of its original Switch console, sparking criticism from players over rising costs of gaming, while Microsoft also increased prices of its Xbox consoles and accessories in several markets.
The impact of US tariffs is being felt across multiple industries. Retail giant Home Depot has warned of higher prices on some imported goods, while sportswear brands Adidas and Nike have already increased US retail prices to offset additional costs.
Analysts say that with inflationary pressures, tariffs, and supply chain challenges persisting, US consumers could see further price hikes in electronics, fashion, and beyond.
