Washington, D.C.: Walmart has recalled several varieties of frozen shrimp sold under its Great Value label after a shipment tested positive for radioactive contamination, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA said the contaminated shipment, sourced from an Indonesian supplier, was found to contain traces of Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope known to increase the long-term risk of cancer. Officials confirmed that one sample of breaded shrimp tested positive, but emphasised that this particular batch did not reach US consumers.
Consumers, distributors, and retailers should not eat, serve or sell impacted lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart.

Despite this, Walmart has pulled the affected products from shelves across 13 states, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. Customers who recently purchased frozen shrimp matching the recall description are urged not to eat or serve the product and instead discard it immediately.
A Walmart spokesperson stated that, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. We have issued a sales restriction and removed this product from our impacted stores. We are working with the supplier to investigate.” The company confirmed that shoppers can return recalled products to any Walmart location for a full refund.
The FDA added that while the radiation levels detected were not enough to cause acute harm, repeated exposure to contaminated food could damage living cells and elevate cancer risk. The Indonesian supplier linked to the shipment has since had multiple containers denied entry into the United States.
