South Lake Tahoe: Lake Tahoe boat capsize has claimed six lives and left 2 people missing after strong winds and huge waves overturned a 27-foot vessel near DL Bliss State Park. The accident occurred on Lake Tahoe, a major tourist destination on the California-Nevada border.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has reported that two survivors have been rescued from the frigid waters and are receiving hospital treatment for hypothermia and related injuries. According to the US Coast Guard, the vessel, a 27-foot gold Chris-Craft boat, was hit by strong gusts reaching thirty-five miles per hour, creating swells up to eight feet high.
An emergency call reporting the Lake Tahoe boat capsize was received. 10 people ended up in the frigid water as temperatures dropped close to freezing, bringing rain and snow to the surrounding Sierra Nevada region. The sheriff’s dive team, and search and rescue units have continued to search the shoreline, though the victims’ names have not yet been released.

Regional outlets have noted that air temperatures around Lake Tahoe fell to near freezing on Saturday afternoon, bringing snow to the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. Videos circulating online show large waves slamming boats against docks, causing additional damage and concerns about fuel leaks into the lake.
The accident happened near Rooster Rock, an area known for its steep underwater drop-offs reaching depths over 300 feet. Lake Tahoe remains North America’s largest alpine lake with an average depth close to one thousand feet, according to the University of California, Davis.
