Bucharest: George Simion has emerged as the leading figure in the Romanian presidential election 2025 after a decisive victory in the first round. The right-wing nationalist secured 40.96 per cent of the vote, placing him well ahead of liberal rival Nicușor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest, who claimed just under 21%.
Simion is known for his scepticism towards the European Union and his firm opposition to military support for Ukraine. His success marks a significant shift in Romania’s political landscape and is being closely watched by leaders across Europe and the United States.
The runoff is scheduled for 18 May, where Simion will face Dan in what is expected to be a high-stakes contest. The first round result follows a controversial annulled election six months ago. That vote was initially won by radical outsider Calin Georgescu but was cancelled due to claims of campaign fraud and foreign interference. Georgescu, now barred from the rerun, endorsed Simion and voted alongside him on Sunday.

Simion thanked supporters in a recorded message, saying: “This election is not about one candidate or another, but about every Romanian who has been lied to, ignored, humiliated, and still has the strength to believe and defend our identity.”
His campaign has drawn support from those disillusioned with traditional politics. Many former Georgescu and Victor Ponta voters are believed to have backed Simion in the first round. Simion’s rise has raised concerns in Western capitals. Romania is a key NATO member and a transit point for military aid to Ukraine.
Tensions escalated further after U.S. Vice-President JD Vance criticised Romania for annulling the original poll. The U.S. recently withdrew a visa-waiver agreement, adding to diplomatic strain. However, Simion seems a Trump admirer. The country hosts U.S. missile defence systems and NATO airbases. George Simion insists he is not pro-Russian but has made Romanian identity and sovereignty central to his message. Public frustration over aid to Ukrainian refugees has been a major campaign theme.
As the Romanian presidential election 2025 heads into its final stage, the outcome could reshape the country’s role in Europe and beyond.
