United States: US President Donald Trump has issued what he described as a “last warning” to Hamas, demanding the immediate release of hostages held in Gaza. In a strongly worded statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump vowed to equip Israel with “everything it needs to finish the job” and warned that “not a single Hamas member will be safe” if his demands were not met.
The statement comes just hours after the White House confirmed it has engaged in direct negotiations with Hamas—marking a significant departure from previous US policy, which has long prohibited direct contact with groups designated as terrorist organisations.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that discussions between a US official and Hamas representatives have taken place, following consultations with Israeli officials. Special envoy for hostages Adam Boehler has led the effort, which has included two direct meetings preceded by multiple communications.
The talks, reportedly held in Qatar, aim to secure the release of American hostages and discuss a broader deal to end the war. Axios first reported the negotiations, revealing that they took place in Doha, where Hamas has maintained a base since 2012. Qatar, a key US ally, has played a major role in mediating conflicts in the region, including negotiations with Iran, the Taliban, and Russia.
In his social media post, Trump issued a stark warning to Hamas, stating that, “Release all of the hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is over for you.” He also appeared to address civilians in Gaza, stating that, “A beautiful Future awaits, but not if you hold Hostages. If you do, you are DEAD!”
Trump had previously made similar threats against Hamas in December, warning there would be “all hell to pay” if hostages were not freed by the time he took office. His latest remarks followed a meeting at the White House with recently released hostages and their families.
Israel has acknowledged the US talks with Hamas but has not provided further details. A statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office noted that Israel had “expressed its position” on the discussions. Meanwhile, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for the Middle East, Mick Mulroy, cautioned that while US engagement is necessary, it must be closely coordinated with Israel.
Israel reports that 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with up to 24 believed to be alive. Among them are American citizens, prompting US efforts to expedite their release. Qatar has played a central role in negotiations, working alongside the US and Egypt in efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The Gulf state hosts a major American air base and has facilitated sensitive diplomatic efforts with various regional actors, including Iran and the Taliban.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Trump’s forceful stance signals his administration’s commitment to securing the hostages’ release, while also raising tensions in an already volatile situation.
