London: Pop star Charli XCX has been named Songwriter of the Year by the Brit Awards, signaling her potential to dominate this year’s ceremony, which will take place on Saturday, March 1, at London’s O2 Arena.
The English singer leads all nominees with five nods, reflecting the global success of her acclaimed album Brat. This recognition marks her first-ever Brit Award, despite being in the industry for 12 years and previously receiving nominations for Best Female and Best Pop Act.
In 2023, Charli criticized the Brit Awards for failing to nominate any female artists for Artist of the Year, stating, “We’re doing everything right, I don’t think it’s our fault, I think it might be theirs,” referring to the voting academy.
This year, she is a top contender for Best Artist, competing against seven-time Brit winner Dua Lipa, rap star Central Cee, and indie singer Sam Fender. She is also nominated for Album of the Year, Best Dance Act, Best Pop Artist, and Song of the Year for Guess, her collaboration with Billie Eilish.

Charli’s long-time producer AG Cook was also recognized earlier this week, winning the Brit Award for Producer of the Year.
Her recent success marks a turning point in her career, as Brat helped her transition from a cult pop icon to mainstream commercial success without sacrificing her artistic vision. The album, praised by critics as “pop music for the future,” was named the best album of 2024 on multiple end-of-year lists. Its deeply personal lyrics explore themes of insecurity, anxiety, and obsession, which Charli herself describes as “chaos and emotional turmoil set to a club soundtrack.”
With its bold lime-green artwork and a viral dance trend associated with the song Apple, Brat sparked a cultural movement dubbed “Brat summer.”
Earlier this month, Charli won Best Dance Album and Best Packaging at the Grammy Awards, marking her first solo victories at the prestigious US event. She also delivered a high-energy closing performance of Von Dutch and Guess, which ended with the stage being showered in underwear—later donated to the domestic violence charity I Support Girls.
While Charli is set to attend the Brit Awards, she has chosen not to perform. The event, hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall, will feature performances from Lola Young, Sam Fender, Sabrina Carpenter, Jade, Myles Smith, The Last Dinner Party, and Teddy Swims.
