United States: President Donald Trump’s administration has introduced a significant initiative to lessen the size of the U.S. government by offering buyout packages to federal workers. In an email sent to millions of workers, Trump’s team offered an opportunity for employees to leave their positions through a “deferred resignation programme” by 6 February.

Those who choose to take the offer will receive a severance package equivalent to eight months’ salary. The programme is expected to see up to 10 percent of federal workers, or approximately 200,000 of the more than two million federal employees, take the buyout offer. Senior officials contend the move could save the government up to $100 billion.

The offer is not raised to all government employees, however. Postal workers, military personnel, immigration officials, and some national security employees are excluded. The initiative follows Trump’s earlier decision to direct federal workers who have been working remotely since the pandemic to return to office full-time.

The message from the Office of Personnel Management also includes a notice to those who desire to stay. Future downsizing could affect their positions, but the administration comforts that employees will be treated with dignity if their roles are eliminated.

This move aligns with Trump’s long-standing goal of cutting government size and spending, a priority he highlighted during his campaign. Trump has also tapped business figures such as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to help simplify federal regulations and operations.

In addition to the buyout offer, Trump encountered significant backlash on other fronts, including a determination to pause federal grants and loans. This order was temporarily blocked by a district judge after widespread chaos over its potential impact on critical programmes like Social Security and Medicaid.

On the same day, Trump marked an executive order aimed at restricting gender care for young people, a move likely to encourage legal challenges. The combination of these actions marks a pivotal moment in Trump’s presidency, with significant importance for the future structure of the federal government and its policies.
