Devon & Cornwall: Motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could soon be caught by an innovative AI camera, currently being tested in Devon and Cornwall.
The cutting-edge Heads-Up system, developed by Acusensus, is designed to detect signs of impaired driving, including erratic road behaviour linked to alcohol or drug use.
The camera, which can be quickly relocated to any road within the counties, captures data in real-time and alerts police further down the road, who can then stop the vehicle and perform roadside tests for alcohol or drugs. This unannounced technology catches drivers off-guard, making it more difficult for impaired drivers to avoid detection.
Geoff Collins, UK general manager of Acusensus, expressed pride in launching the world’s first trials of this technology in the UK. Collins stated that, “We are delighted to be conducting the world’s first trials of this technology right here in Devon and Cornwall.”
The system is part of a broader initiative to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries, particularly those involving drunk driving. Statistics reveal that drivers under the influence of alcohol are six times more likely to be involved in fatal accidents.
As part of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, Devon & Cornwall Police are hopeful the Heads-Up system will significantly enhance efforts to improve road safety.
Supt Simon Jenkinson, who oversees policing in the 14,000 miles of roads across Devon and Cornwall, emphasised the value of such emerging technologies remarking that, “Our officers cannot be everywhere, but embracing technology like these cameras is vital in reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.”
The trial, which runs throughout December, coincides with national drink-driving campaigns, underscoring the urgency of combating impaired driving during the holiday season.
