TikTok bans Russian State Media to combat political disinformation

This decision stems from concerns about covert influence operations aimed at manipulating public opinion and disrupting the electoral process.

Washington DC: TikTok has banned multiple accounts linked to Russian state media a significant move ahead of the upcoming U.S. elections. This decision stems from concerns about covert influence operations aimed at manipulating public opinion and disrupting the electoral process.

The accounts affected belong to the media group Rossiya Segodnya, which operates the RIA Novosti and Sputnik news services, as well as TV-Novosti, the parent organization of the RT news channel.

TikTok stated that these accounts had previously faced restrictions in the UK and EU, and their global content was labelled as state-controlled media. However, they are now believed to have been permanently banned.

This action comes on the heels of a similar decision made last week by Meta, which banned Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other accounts for engaging in “foreign interference activity.”

The bans follow the recent filing of charges by the U.S. against two RT employees, who are accused of attempting to hire an American company to create online content aimed at influencing the election.

TikTok emphasized its commitment to transparency and user safety, noting that it is continuously monitoring content and adapting its policies to address emerging threats.

As the election season approaches, the move to ban these accounts reflects a growing awareness among social media platforms of their role in safeguarding democratic processes. This development highlights the ongoing battle against disinformation, particularly in the digital age, where social media plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse and influencing voter behaviour.
