Tel Aviv: Thousands of anti-government opponents cluster together in Tel Aviv, prompting the Israeli government to strengthen efforts to secure the release of captives held by Hamas in Gaza.
The demonstrators marched outside army headquarters and key government buildings, conveying frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the situation. The slogan against Netanyahu filled the air, with many calling for a deal with Hamas to return approximately 100 captives who remain in Gaza. These mass objections have gained momentum in recent weeks following the discovery of six captives’ bodies in Gaza, which has further inflamed public sentiment.
An approximate 750,000 people participated in a rally last weekend, highlighting the growing pressure on the Israeli government. Families of those held captive, who took part in the Saturday demonstration, raised their over what they see as failed negotiations. Many hold Netanyahu personally responsible, accusing him of stalling any potential deal to prolong his time in power amidst the ongoing war.
Yotam Cohen, whose brother Nimrod is a soldier held in Gaza, denounced the government for forsaking the captives and abandoning them to die. He argued that the captives’ lives could only be saved if Netanyahu is replaced, as he believes the prime minister is prolonging the war without securing a hostage deal.
Despite the pressure, Netanyahu has remained firm, asserting that he will carry on with the war until all of Israel’s objectives are met, though none of these have been realized nearly a year into the conflict.
The deaths of the six captives, whose bodies were found in a Gaza tunnel by the Israeli military, have intensified the roar.
Naama Weinberg, a cousin of one of the deceased captives, Itay Svirsky stated that, “They are dying, locked up in small unventilated cells, in tunnels deep underground without air, enough food, without seeing the light of day for 11 months.”
The conflict began on October 7, when Hamas-led fighters launched attacks in southern Israel, killing over 1,100 people and capturing nearly 250. In retaliation, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 41,000 Palestinians and displaced almost the entire population of 2.3 million people.
