During the 90-minute-long first U.S. Presidential debate hosted by ABC News on Tuesday, 2024 September 10, night, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris (59) was evaluated as having led the discussion against her opponent, former Republican President Donald Trump (78).
In the debate aimed at persuading voters ahead of the election on 5 November, key issues such as immigration and abortion rights were prominently discussed. For the most part, her performance was largely seen as strong, with her assertiveness shining through despite occasional nerves.
The debate allowed both candidates to showcase their personalities and policy stances; their body language spoke volumes. Harris’s direct eye contact with Trump demonstrated her readiness to challenge him, even when he avoided meeting her gaze. Trump, by contrast, seemed less confrontational, often diverting his focus away from Harris.
One of the notable moments was Harris’s gesture of initiating a handshake with Trump, symbolising unity over division. This act seemed to catch Trump off guard but reflected Harris’s message of respect for the American people.
Throughout the debate, Harris displayed a mix of disbelief and resolve, particularly when responding to some of Trump’s more controversial statements, such as his claim that immigrants were eating pets. Her response, which included open laughter and disbelief, highlighted her candid approach. Trump’s typical expressions, including pursed lips and exaggerated smiles, also came into play, signalling his disagreement with several topics discussed.
While the two candidates share little in common, their frequent blinking when faced with absurd claims was a shared trait. This subtle nonverbal communication provided insight into their reactions during the debate.
Despite their handshake, Trump departed the stage without further interaction with Harris, signalling an end to the spirited debate that left viewers with much to reflect on before election day.
