Mexico: Claudia Sheinbaum is receiving greetings and congratulations sent by leaders from across the Americas. She will become the first female president of Mexico following her historic victory in the national election.
Government representatives from other nations, including Brazil, Chile, and the US, have praised the recently elected president, who received more than 59 percent of the vote on Sunday.
Beginning on October 1, Sheinbaum will serve as the representative for the left-leaning National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party.
“I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first woman President of Mexico. I look forward to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries,” US President Joe Biden said in a press release on Monday.
Sheinbaum will succeed Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the founder of the Morena party, who is now serving as president. He goes by the initials AMLO. Sheinbaum promised to advance his key policies during her six-year time in office during the campaign.
Leaders of the left in Latin America, with whom Lopez Obrador has sought close relations, voiced hope following Sunday’s elections, which saw Sheinbaum defeat a coalition with a conservative-leaning.
Sheinbaum’s election is historic as the nation’s first elected female leader, but it also creates history as the nation’s first Jewish president. Sheinbaum, an energy engineer, was involved in a 2007 climate change study that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year.
