Manama: Off the coast of Bahrain, in a startling incident, two British Royal Navy mine-hunter vessels (British Warships), HMS Chiddingfold and HMS Bangor, collided in Bahrain Harbour last Friday. The Royal Navy has confirmed the incident, reassuring that no injuries were reported despite the collision’s severity.
Social media captured the event, showing HMS Chiddingfold backing into the docked HMS Bangor, resulting in a loud crash and visible rocking of the latter ship. Although the footage was dramatic, officials reported no personnel injuries, though both ships sustained damage.
The Royal Navy, known for its high safety standards and strict training protocols, has expressed concern over the incident. Rear Admiral Edward Ahlgren, Commander Operations of the Royal Navy, commented on the ongoing investigation, which aims to determine the causes of the collision and assess the need for enhancing safety measures.
This incident occurred amid heightened naval activities in the Gulf region, where the British and U.S. Navies collaborated to protect shipping lanes in the Red Sea. This cooperation focuses on countering increased maritime threats from Houthi forces in Yemen, which have disrupted global trade and posed risks to international shipping.
Rear Admiral Ahlgren emphasized the UK’s dedication to ensuring the safety of commercial shipping in this strategic region. The ongoing investigation into the collision is part of the Navy’s efforts to uphold maritime security and address the challenges in these critical trade routes.
