India: Australia have won their sixth title by beating host and tournament favorites India by six wickets in the final held in Ahmedabad. The 2023 World Cup victory extended Australia’s record of title wins to seven.

Australia, having won the toss, made a strategic decision by opting to bowl. The Australian bowling attack dominated after a fast-paced powerplay, restricting India to a total of 240. Indian captain Rohit Sharma displayed an aggressive start, scoring 47 runs from 31 balls, but the Australian bowlers, led by a disciplined performance, took control.

Facing a target of 241 to win the World Cup, Australia went through a challenging start, losing three early wickets to India’s seam attack. Despite the unstable start, a powerful partnership between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne secured the victory for Australia. Head played a major role, scoring a magnificent century, while Labuschagne assisted with a remarkable half-century.

Travis Head, the star with the bat, was caught in the deep with just one run needed to win, leaving a standing ovation after scoring 137 from 120 runs. Glenn Maxwell then scored the winning runs as Australia claimed victory with six wickets and seven overs left, securing their sixth ICC Cricket World Cup crown.

Following the loss, Rohit said his team “tried everything” but fell short. “When KL Rahul and Kohli were batting, we were looking at 280 [runs]. Australia stitched up a good partnership to win the game and took the game away from us,” the Indian captain added.

Rohit refused to blame the pitch for his side’s batting display, though he noted that it “definitely improved under the lights.” Virat Kohli, who was named the player of the tournament for his outstanding batting performance, ended the tournament as the top-scoring batter.

Australian Captain Pat Cummins said his team was brave and took the game on at times.

“This year will be a year we remember for a long, long time. We’ve pretty much spent the whole Australian winter away from home. We have had a lot of success, but this pips it all—this is the top of the mountain,” the Australian captain further shared.
