Ukraine: Ms. Greta Thunberg, a well-known environmental activist, criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the lack of international response to the environmental damage caused by the conflict. The activist described the destruction of the environment as a form of warfare, which Ukrainians have experienced firsthand.

Thunberg made these remarks during a visit to Kyiv as part of an international delegation investigating the environmental consequences of the conflict. Ms. Thunberg held a news conference alongside Ukrainian presidential aide Mr. Andriy Yermak and met with President Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky.

One particular incident highlighted was the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in the Kherson region on June 6th 2023. The dam’s destruction resulted in flooding that caused the loss of many lives and forced thousands of people to flee. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the dam, while Russia claimed that Ukraine shelled it. Both sides blamed each other for the disaster.

Ms. Thunberg expressed her disappointment with the international response, stating that it has not been sufficient. Ms. Thunberg emphasized the importance of giving a voice to those affected by such catastrophes and sharing information about the situation on the ground. Ms.Thunberg urged everyone to raise awareness and speak out about the environmental destruction occurring in Ukraine.

Additionally, concerns were raised about the safety of the Zaporizhzhia power station, the largest nuclear plant in Europe, which is currently under Russian control. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Rafael Grossi, has repeatedly warned about the potential risks of a major accident at the plant.
