Saudi Arabia: US Secretary of State Mr. Antony Blinken has embarked on a diplomatic mission to mend relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia. In a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the two leaders expressed their commitment to advancing stability, security, and prosperity in the Middle East and beyond.
Mr. Blinken highlighted the importance of progress on human rights in strengthening bilateral relations and thanked Saudi Arabia for its assistance in evacuating US citizens from Sudan and its diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts in Sudan.
This visit follows a trip by White House national security adviser Mr. Jake Sullivan to Saudi Arabia in May and aims to address deepening disagreements between the two countries on issues such as human rights, Iran, regional security, and oil prices. Mr. Blinken’s discussions with top Saudi officials during his three-day visit are expected to focus on regaining influence over oil prices, countering Chinese and Russian influence in the region, and fostering the possibility of normalized relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
One key objective of the visit is to discourage closer ties between Saudi Arabia and China. Analysts suggest that Blinken will emphasize the misalignment of Chinese interests with those of Saudi Arabia and how closer relations with Beijing could hinder closer ties with Washington. The relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia had a turbulent start in 2019 when President Mr. Joe Biden, during his campaign, expressed his intention to treat Riyadh as a pariah. Tensions escalated further when Mr. Biden released an intelligence assessment accusing the Crown Prince of approving the killing of journalist Mr. Jamal Khashoggi.
However, experts note that despite surface-level strains, the overall relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia has strengthened, particularly in areas of security cooperation. While challenges remain, both countries are working towards restoring mutual trust and collaboration on regional and global issues. Mr. Blinken’s visit signifies a continued effort to address concerns, rebuild ties, and foster stability in the Middle East.
