US approves increase in Chinese airline flights

The decision to expand flight allowances may suggest a willingness on both sides to pursue greater economic collaboration.

United States: In a move signalling a potential improvement in commercial relations between the United States and China, Washington has announced that it will permit Chinese airlines to increase their weekly flights to 12 round trips.

This represents a rare example of cooperation between the two countries, which have been engaged in a prolonged trade dispute that has resulted in significant tariffs on each other’s goods. The decision to expand flight allowances may suggest a willingness on both sides to pursue greater economic collaboration.

The US Transportation Department (USDOT) made an announcement that brings parity to the number of flights allowed for Chinese and US airlines. The USDOT stated that Chinese airlines will now be permitted to operate up to 12 round trips per week to the United States, aligning with the limit that Beijing currently allows for US airlines.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines will experience a reduction in their weekly round-trip flight allowance from a total of eight to just four, according to a new ruling. The decision, which was announced recently, means that the three major US carriers will need to adjust their flight schedules accordingly.

According to the USDOT, Chinese limitations on air travel have inflicted significant harm on travel between the US and China, and the effects of these restrictions are ongoing. The USDOT has stated that it intends to promote a gradual and comprehensive reopening of the aviation market, in order to counteract these negative impacts. The USDOT’s decision to increase flight allowances for Chinese airlines is one step towards achieving this goal, as it signals a commitment to creating a more balanced and equitable environment for air travel between the two nations.

Since China abandoned its strict “zero COVID” policy last year, it has been actively seeking to increase the number of flights between China and the US. However, these efforts have been hindered by a longstanding dispute over the cost advantages that Chinese airlines have enjoyed over their US counterparts due to their ability to fly over Russian airspace.

This has created an imbalance in the market and placed American Airlines at a disadvantage. Despite this, the recent decision by the USDOT to increase flight allowances for Chinese airlines may signal a willingness on both sides to address these issues and work towards a more level playing field in the aviation industry.

In response to the US’s ban on Russian airlines as a protest against Moscow’s involvement in Ukraine, Russia imposed its own ban on foreign airlines, including those from the US. As a result, many airlines have had to reroute their flights, resulting in a cost disadvantage for some. While the recent increase in flight allowances for Chinese airlines may be seen as a positive step towards normalizing US-China relations, air travel between the two nations is still a fraction of what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020. Against a backdrop of a tense and competitive relationship between the US and China, the decision to expand flight allowances represents a rare bright spot in an otherwise strained and challenging bilateral relationship.
