United Kingdom: A new study has found that the Juan Fernández fur seal, a species that was hunted to near-extinction in the 19th century, can tolerate high levels of cadmium and other metallic pollutants without any adverse effects. The Juan Fernández seal is a rare aquatic mammal that lives only on the Juan Fernández archipelago and nearby islands in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles off the coast of Chile. The species was believed to be extinct until a small colony was found in a cave on the island in the 1960s. Since then, the species has been protected, and its population has slowly recovered, with around 80,000 seals living on the island’s rocky shores.

“The discovery that these animals appear to tolerate high levels of cadmium in their bodies has important medical implications, and it is very important for us to find out exactly how the Juan Fernández seal achieves this. It could have something to do with the animal’s genes or something completely different. It is an issue that we are hoping to follow up on over the coming years. These animals have a lot to tell us,” Ms. Toro-Valdivieso added.
