Thailand: According to an announcement in the Royal Gazette, Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn has endorsed a decree to dissolve parliament for elections in May 2023.
If the house is dissolute, which takes place right away, an election needs to be held 45 to 60 days later. “This is a return of political decision-making power to the people swiftly to continue democratic government with the King as head of state,” cited in the decree published.
However a date for the election has not yet been set, Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Wissanu Krea-ngam earlier in the day stated that if the house were to be dissolved, it would probably take place on 14th May 2023. The election is the first after the nation was shaken by significant youth-led pro-democracy protesters in Bangkok in 2020 and the second since the coup in 2014. It is likely to display a long-running political conflict between the rich Shinawatra family and the country’s conservative pro-military elite.
Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the niece and daughter of the deposed former Prime Ministers Mr. Thaksin and Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra, respectively, is the front-runner in polls to become the next prime minister after her support increased by 10 points to 38.2 percent over the weekend.
Prime Minister Mr. Prayut Chan-ocha, who has been in charge since a coup against the Pheu Thai government in 2014, was ranked third in the National Institute of Development Administration poll with 15.65 percent. Ms. Paetongtarn recently declared that she was certain to win the election handily in an effort to prevent any political manoeuvring against her party, which has previously been ousted from power by military coups and judicial judgements.
