Nepal: Western Nepal has struck a magnitude-5.6 earthquake, reportedly taking at least 119 lives. Around 190,000 people live in the western area of Jajarkot, where the earthquake hit.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said it was just 18 kilometres (11 miles) deep. The vibrations were felt in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and in the Indian capital, New Delhi, which is about 600km (375 miles) away from Jajarkot.

According to a resident in New Delhi who spoke to the Britain Herald, they didn’t feel much shaking, as seismic activity is not uncommon in this region.

Jajarkot local official Mr. Harish Chandra Sharma stated that at least 34 people had been killed in his district, while in neighbouring Rukum West district, police official Mr. Namaraj Bhattarai said at least 35 deaths had been reported.

Nepal Prime Minister Mr. Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed “his deep sorrow over the human and material damage caused by the earthquake at Ramidanda in Jajarkot at 11:47 on Friday night and has mobilized all 3 security agencies for the immediate rescue and relief of the injured.”

Nepal lies between China and India in South Asia. Nepal has the greatest altitude shift of any location on Earth, as per the statement. The lowlands are at sea level, and the mountains of the Himalayas are the most elevated in the world.

In 2015, nearly 9,000 people died in a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal. Moreover, in November 2022, six people died in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake.
