Rome: In the first incident, rescuers from the German charity ResQship found 10 bodies on a wooden boat in the central Mediterranean on Monday. The ship, believed to have departed from Tunisia, was 40 miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa. ResQship rescued 51 people from the vessel.

In the second incident, a shipwreck in the Ionian Sea, about 100 miles off the Calabrian coast, left 66 people, including 26 children, missing on Monday afternoon. A cargo ship rescued 12 people and brought them to port, but one woman later died. This ship had reportedly departed from Turkey.

    Details of the Incidents:

    Central Mediterranean Shipwreck:

    • Location: 40 miles south of Lampedusa
    • Casualties: 10 bodies found
    • Rescued: 51 people
    • Rescue Team: German charity ResQship
    • Vessel Origin: Tunisia

    Ionian Sea Shipwreck:

    • Location: 100 miles off the Calabrian coast
    • Casualties: 66 people missing, including 26 children
    • Rescued: 12 people (one later died)
    • Vessel Origin: Turkey

    Witness Accounts and Responses:

    • Alarm Phone Statement: The hotline service for distressed migrants reported that the Nadir, a small rescue vessel, assisted a boat carrying about 60 people. Unfortunately, they arrived too late to save 10 people who died on the lower deck.
    • Survivors’ Accounts: Survivors spoke of entire families from Afghanistan who left Turkey eight days ago. They traveled without lifejackets and endured water ingress for several days.
    • Official Reactions: Roberto Occhiuto, the president of the Calabria region, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, comparing it to a previous tragedy in Cutro, where 94 people died in February 2023. He called for greater attention to the Turkish route used by migrants.

    Additional Context:

    • Recent Arrivals: On Sunday night, 173 people arrived on three boats in Lampedusa from Zawia, Libya. These vessels carried people from Bangladesh, Sudan, Syria, and Egypt.
    • UN Statistics: The central Mediterranean route is one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes. Since 2014, over 20,000 deaths and disappearances have been recorded.

These tragic incidents highlight the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants seeking safety and better opportunities in Europe. Increased attention and coordinated efforts are essential to prevent such tragedies in the future.
